Wolverine: Weapon X

(Art by Barry Windsor-Smith)

The iconic story of how the mutant Logan was captured, experimented on and subjected to cruel tortures in order to turn him into a living weapon; Weapon X.

I'm finding it very hard to find the words to review this book.  The story on offer here will be very familiar to comics fans in much the same way that Peter Parker getting bitten by a radioactive spider or Bruce Wayne's parents being murdered is.  We all know that Logan was experimented on, had adamantium forcibly bonded to his skeleton and suffered terrible mental trauma as a result.  So there's nothing here that is likely to surprise you and I'll admit to being tempted to mark this book down for that.  However, this was the first time this period of Logan's life was explored and it's not really fair to judge it by what came after (Huge Jacked-Man, for example).

What this book is then, is a really well-written and tightly plotted story with artwork that perfectly complements the script (which is only to be expected when Barry Windsor-Smith did both).  I think where this book really excels is in the numerous scenes where Logan is painted as this animalistic killing machine, less than human, but it is the scientists who've tortured him who are proven to be lacking in humanity.

This book won't hold anything new for long-time comics readers, but it is just really, really well done.
