Star Wars: Tales From The Clone Wars - Webcomic Collection: Season 1

(Art by Tom Hodges, Grant Gould, Katie Cook and Jeff Carlisle)

Twenty-four short stories, each tying-in to an episode of the first season of The Clone Wars.  Featuring characters such as Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Aayla Secura, General Grievous, Asajj Ventress, Count Dooku and Cad Bane.

Background first; these stories were originally released on starwars.com alongside the airing of the episodes that they tie-into, providing a little bit of background for the episodes and expanding on some of the characters and situations mentioned.  These webcomics were then collected into this trade paperback which was only available at that year's Star Wars Celebration convention and, for a short time, through the starwars.com shop.  Basically, what you have here is a rare oddity that will appeal most to collectors (like me!).

The stories on offer here are all extremely short, being each only five or six pages long, so anyone looking for a deeply engrossing Clone Wars story had better look elsewhere.  Personally, however, I love these little vignettes for two reasons.  The first is that each offers us the chance to look at an episode of the TV series in a slightly new light, be it learning about more about some of the clone characters or seeing moments of conflict which were only alluded to onscreen.  The second thing I love about this book is the fact that, due to being a big fan himself, Hidalgo is absolutely immersed in Star Wars lore and manages to pepper it throughout the book so that it very much feels connected to the larger Star Wars universe (Jaxxon gets a nod, to those in the know).

I'll freely admit that my appreciation of this book is largely based on fanboyism but if you have a particular love for the storytelling of The Clone Wars, then I think you'd enjoy this.  It's just a shame that the Season 2 stories, not to mention other great Star Wars webcomics like 'Evasive Action' and 'Rookies', are no longer available online, have never seen print and probably never will now.
