Star Wars: The Old Republic - Threat Of Peace

(Art by Alex Sanchez)

Set 3,653 BBY, ten years before 'The Old Republic' MMO, this book tells the story of the Sacking of Coruscant and the end of the Great Galactic War.

This book was originally released as a series of online comics and represents the very earliest tie-in material to TOR, which ultimately proves to be the book's biggest failing.  Because we're introduced to a whole new time period with all the characters and conflicts already in place, if you've not played the MMO (which, obviously, no-one had when this came out) it can feel jarring and unfamiliar.  Sure, there's a few familiar locales but it still all feels strange and hard to grasp.

On the other hand, now that the game has been out long enough to get to know all these aspects, this book is spoiled by the fact that the elements which should now be familiar are not due to being very early in their developmental stages when this was written.  We get to see characters like Satele Shan, Darth Baras, Orgus Din and Darth Angral, but they neither look nor act much like their counterparts in the game and therefore this book doesn't feel like a proper prelude to it.

The other major problem with this book is how broken and disjointed the story feels, never really flowing or linking together the way it should have.

In its defence, it has some great concepts and imagery, but not enough to redeem the book as a whole.
